Overview

PrayPause ("we", "our", or "the app") is committed to protecting your privacy. This policy explains what data we collect, how we use it, and the choices you have. We designed PrayPause with a privacy-first approach: your data stays on your device whenever possible.

What We Do Not Access

  • We do not read content from other apps. PrayPause uses Apple's Screen Time APIs, which provide only opaque app tokens. We cannot see your messages, browsing history, photos, or any in-app content.
  • We do not monitor your activity. App shielding and scheduling are handled by Apple's system frameworks on your device, not by our servers.

Data We Store

PrayPause stores only the minimum data necessary to function:

  • App selection tokens — Opaque tokens provided by Apple's FamilyControls framework representing the apps you choose to restrict. These tokens cannot be reverse-engineered to identify specific apps outside of the Screen Time system.
  • User preferences — Your settings such as prayer schedule, notification preferences, and screen fast configuration.

This data is stored primarily on your device using local storage and Apple's secure containers.

AI-Powered Prayer Generation (Premium Feature)

PrayPause offers an optional premium feature that uses artificial intelligence to generate personalized prayers. This feature is powered by OpenAI's API (GPT-4o-mini model). Free users do not use this feature — they receive prayers from a local, pre-written bank of 150+ prayers stored entirely on-device.

When a premium user requests an AI-generated prayer, the following non-identifying contextual data is sent to OpenAI:

  • A general emotional state (e.g., "feeling happy" or "feeling sad") — derived from a 1-5 slider
  • A spiritual closeness descriptor (e.g., "seeking connection with God") — derived from a 1-5 slider
  • Prayer length preference (short, medium, or long)
  • Language preference (English, Portuguese, or Spanish)

No personally identifiable information (such as name, email, device ID, location, IP address, or any user account data) is ever sent to the AI service. The data transmitted is entirely abstract and cannot be used to identify any individual user. All communication with the AI service is encrypted via HTTPS. User consent is required before any data is sent to OpenAI. The first time a premium user requests an AI-generated prayer, the app displays a clear consent screen explaining what data will be sent and identifying OpenAI as the recipient. The user must explicitly accept before any data is transmitted. This consent is stored on-device and the prompt does not appear again after acceptance. Users who decline will receive a prayer from the local on-device bank instead, with no data sent to any external service.

Third-Party Services

PrayPause uses the following third-party services:

  • RevenueCat — For managing in-app subscriptions. RevenueCat processes purchase data through Apple's App Store. No personal data beyond what Apple shares for purchase processing is collected. See RevenueCat's Privacy Policy.
  • OpenAI — For AI-generated prayers (premium only). Only non-identifying contextual data is sent, as described above. See OpenAI's Privacy Policy.

Analytics

If analytics are used, they are aggregated, non-identifying, and optional. We may collect anonymous usage statistics (e.g., how many times a prayer session was completed) to improve the app experience. These analytics never include personal information, app selection details, or content from other apps. You may opt out of analytics at any time in the app's settings.

No Sale of Personal Data

We do not sell, trade, or rent your personal data to third parties. We do not share your data with advertisers. PrayPause does not contain ads.

Screen Time Authorization

PrayPause requires your explicit authorization to use Apple's Screen Time APIs (FamilyControls, ManagedSettings, DeviceActivity). This authorization is managed entirely by iOS. You can revoke it at any time by navigating to iOS Settings > Screen Time. Upon revocation, all restrictions applied by PrayPause are immediately removed.

Children's Privacy

PrayPause is a self-management tool designed for individual users. It is not intended for use by children under 13. We do not knowingly collect personal data from children.

Changes to This Policy

We may update this Privacy Policy from time to time. Any changes will be posted on this page with an updated "Last updated" date. We encourage you to review this page periodically.
